Evil is a very real thing. The evening news frequently reports on events that make us shudder, whether it is the evil of a nation or the horrendous, vile acts of an individual. A constant diet of the evening news could cast us into despair.
Many worldly pundits dismiss the nature and power of evil. But it’s real. Evil is much more than mistaken decisions people make. Scripture teaches that is in an ancient force operating in our world. How else could we explain the Holocaust or the reality of multiple murderers?
Recently, Pope Francis wrote, “The Christian knows how overwhelming the power of evil is, and yet also knows how much Jesus is on our side and comes to our aid.” His statement addresses the key point for Christians: as bad as evil is, we have a greater power on our side in Jesus.
It’s not an empty phrase from the Lord’s prayer, “…deliver us from evil.” Our focus on the Truth of the Bible, and our immediate access to Jesus in prayer is the strongest response to evil we can make, and the strongest protection we can have.
Avoid evil, but don’t elevate it to a paralyzing fear. After all, Jesus is on your side.
Amazed, the people exclaimed, “What authority and power this man’s words possess! Even evil spirits obey him, and they flee at his command!” The news about Jesus spread through every village in the entire region. Luke 4:36,37
Yes, and the Lord will deliver me from every evil attack and will bring me safely into his heavenly Kingdom. All glory to God forever and ever! Amen. 2 Timothy 4:18
