When you drive on major highways you’ll frequently see signs regarding maximum load bearing strength. Our roads are made with a maximum weight they can bear without beginning to wear down or break down. They also need regular maintenance to continue to bear those loads.
So it is with us. There are physical, and emotional loads that, if exceeded, will wear us down. These are spiritual, mental, and physical limitations that cannot be exceeded without damage to us. We don’t know what they are in terms of weight, but we sense the wear and tear by examining how we feel, how we are emotionally, how were relating to others, and how we are doing spiritually.
It’s my opinion that the spiritual element is key to balancing all the others. The Lord has told us that He is with us, watches over us, is our strength and our hope. You can see that the spiritual foundation should be what everything else is built on.
This doesn’t mean that we ignore the others, but that, when we begin to sense too much weight upon our life’s road, the first thing is to attend to our hearts and our Lord first.
The spiritual guides all else in our lives to a balance designed by the One who designed us.
Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
