Thoughts and Prayers
There has been a religious controversy regarding the recent tragedy of the tragic Florida school shooting.
I lack the wisdom to provide a solution to the problem of guns in the hands of people with evil intent. I do know that we must strive to keep weapons out of the hands of children and those who are likely to be a danger to our communities. How we will do this must be a top priority for our nation.
The issue I do know something about is prayer. Some have mocked religious people for offering the grace of thoughts and prayers for those grieving, as well as for all children in our nation and beyond.
We know that our prayers will not reverse time, nor are they going to bring those loved ones back. We pray for comfort and hope for those who are grieving. What our prayers do is direct needed comfort to people in pain. God can direct his power as he wishes, and the ultimate healing will be heaven.
In the meantime, we offer prayer not as a the one solution to our national problem but to send deeply needed comfort to devastated families and communities. I have been the recipient of thoughts and prayers following a violent death in my family. For me, as for countless others, they are appreciated and are a source of healing.
Keep on praying. Offer personal presence where you can and, with humility, pray for those who hurt.
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. James 5:16
