RENEWAL Devotional: Talking to Yourself can be Helpful

Written by Lydia D’Ross, Ordained Minister and Outreach Chaplain for RENEWAL at Brookhaven Hospital

I often said to my son, “Stop talking to yourself!” However, he was actually reminding himself of something or reasoning through problems out loud.

Talking to yourself is not the same as praying out loud, so that you can feel better about your soul. Talking and praying out loud to remind yourself of God’s promise to you can help to get you through life’s difficulties.

David brought exhortation to himself because his soul needed reminders. When David was facing wars, he reminded himself of this before he killed the lion and the bear with his own hands. He reminded himself that God was with him. David reminded himself that God was with him when he killed Goliath.

We need  to talk to ourselves everyday and remind ourselves about what God has done for us. Where he brought us out of, and where God is going to lead us by the promises of His word. Bringing us back to those moments in time, encourages our inner spirit and strengthens us to move forward in life.

“With God, all things are possible.” Matthew 19:26
