RENEWAL Devotional: Surround Yourself with Positive People
“Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company ruins good morals.’”–1 Corinthians 15:33
Have you ever noticed how easy it is to pick up things from the people you are around? You might start to use the same words or turns of phrase. The influence of those we spend time with can be positive, negative or neutral. This is why it’s important to surround ourselves with people who will have a positive effect on us. Negativity often spreads faster than positivity. We actually have a negativity bias embedded in the structure of our brain that helped keep us alive in ancient times, but doesn’t serve us as well today.
The best way to evaluate who you are spending time with and whether they’re having a positive or negative effect on you is to honestly evaluate how you feel after you’ve spent time with them. Do you feel better about yourself? Do you feel drained? Of course, relationships are not all about feeling good. Friends go through difficult times and we are there for them. I’m referring to a motif with the same person. We have a choice about who we spend our time with, and our time is a precious commodity. Spend it with people who lift you up rather than tear you down; people who encourage you to try new things rather than tell you why your idea won’t work; people who tend to be positive rather than negative.
Amen.
