Caring For The Soul

Written by Lydia D’Ross, Ordained Minister and Outreach Chaplain for RENEWAL at Brookhaven Hospital

In the wake of the Orlando massacre our nation mourns with the loved ones of victims and those who survived the attack. Our church communities need to be prepared for emergencies and also to care for those affected by these tragedies. While every church in the area may not be able to establish themselves as a communications hub, there are steps they can take to ready themselves and their congregations.

Pastors can help their community in times of crisis and provide support towards caring for the soul or community by providing, Spiritual, Emotional, Mental, and Physical support. For complete healing and restoration, all four areas need to be addressed.

Scripture tells us in John 16:33 that we will have trouble in this world.  Jesus encourages us that we can have peace in those times of trouble and even during times of crisis.  Having peace in those times of trouble, and even more importantly, being able to share that peace and hope with others is vital to our Christian walk.

Spirituality can help people maintain good mental health. It can help them cope with everyday stress and can keep them grounded. Spirituality can also help people deal with mental distress or mental illness. Spirituality can bring a feeling of being connected to something bigger than yourself and it can provide a way of coping in these difficult times. It can help people make sense of what they are experiencing.
