RENEWAL Devotional: Rely on Jesus in the Midst of Your Storm
Written by Lydia D’Ross, Ordained Minister and Outreach Chaplain for RENEWAL at Brookhaven Hospital
We have forgotten the hope of what Christ has given us: His promises in the midst of our storms. Jesus was sleeping on the boat in the midst of a sea storm when His disciples were faced with a fierce storm. The disciples had forgotten that Jesus is the Prince of Peace.
Sometimes we deal with logic and reasoning without thinking about the end result of a storm. Jesus knew that at the end of the storm, the sea would eventually calm itself. But fear entered the heart of the disciples and they could not wait for the storm to pass. On their own strength, they tried to manage the storm by steering the boat themselves. They were trying to handle the situation on their own merit, strength, intellect, and their own abilities. Forgetting that the Prince of Peace was with them in the midst of their storm.
We tend to be like the disciples: forgetting that the Prince of Peace lives inside of us. We don’t have to struggle to figure out the storm, but instead, rest, and let the storm ride itself out.
We get anxious for nothing and sometimes sink in the seas of our own storm or create a storm out of an otherwise quiet sea. Scripture says in Mark 4:39 that the disciples had to go and wake up the Master. Then Jesus responded so simply with a way out of anxiousness and fear. Simply rest in the Prince of Peace who knows your needs before you even go to Him in prayer.
The next time you face a storm remember to find rest in Him and rely on God’s knowledge instead of your own. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” ~ Isaiah 55:8-9
