Is Mental Illness A Spiritual Illness?
Written by Lydia D’Ross, Ordained Minister and Outreach Chaplain for RENEWAL at Broookhaven Hospital
Grof and Grof describe it as a spiritual emergency “…a crisis of the evolution of consciousness – a time when I experienced the highs of spiritual awareness and the lows of spiritual disconnection.”
Everyone has a different experience of their illness and what measures it takes to heal. When we treat mental illness, it is not just the mind that needs treatment. We need to balance treatment of the mental illness with spiritual care. True and complete healing begins with spiritual transformation that creates change where we need the healing the most, in our emotions.
However, we must first find the root of the problem through mental health counseling so that our spiritual life can not only transform, but bring forth a healing that our soul is yearning for. In essence, we are waking up our spiritual senses, to open the door where our mental awareness becomes a journey towards victory and not sorrow.
The most famous scripture used in applying mental health counseling towards recovery and spiritual transformation is “Be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind (Rom. 12:2).
With God’s Grace, we can do all things – and nothing is impossible for God! (Luke 1:37)
