The Fruit of Goodness
Written by Lydia D’Ross, Ordained Minister and Outreach Chaplain for Renewal at Brookhaven Hospital
In what ways is goodness a fruit of the Holy Spirit? Goodness is a discernment between the flesh and the spirit. In other words, the spiritual fruit of goodness enables sinful man to do good and to be good.
If you sense that sometimes you feel like there is a war going inside you, that may be a good sign. Since goodness doesn’t necessarily come easily, it could mean that you are pursuing goodness. Romans 8:7 says badness comes naturally, but goodness does not. It is a fruit that needs to be developed and worked on purposefully everyday. Everyone has a good and bad nature inside of them, it is what you decide to do with it that produces a negative or positive fruit.
In Christ, we develop a relationship with Him because He is perfect. Once we allow the Fruit of the Spirit to begin to change our lives, all these wonderful fruits that God has given us, the fruit of “…love, joy, peace, patience, kindness gentleness, faithfulness, self–control and goodness. [Galatians 5: 22-23] This is the awesome character of God. This is who He is inside of us, through us and around us.
Do not confuse “doing good” with having the fruit of goodness. They are two opposite traits. You can be active in doing good and with the best of intentions, but not have the fruit of goodness inside of you. [Luke 6: 32-33] “Do not grow weary while doing good, for a good season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith [fellow believers]’ Galatians 6:9-10.
