Why are so many pastors dying by suicide?
Written by Lydia D’Ross, Ordained Minister and Outreach Chaplain for Renewal at Brookhaven Hospital
In less than two months, three pastors have died by suicide. Former US Surgeon General, David Satcher, has stated that “Suicide is the most preventable cause of death.” It is up to all of us to help prevent someone from taking their own life. Pastors are especially vulnerable since they become the holder of the many traumas and difficulties of their church members. Because of confidences they are required to keep, they can feel quite isolated.
If you think that anyone you know might be struggling with thoughts of suicide, you must ask them about it. We are often afraid to ask this question. As much of the suicide prevention literature states, though, it is better to have an angry loved one than a dead one.
