RENEWAL Devotional: Get off the Merry-Go Round!
Written by Lydia D’Ross, Ordained Minister and Outreach Chaplain for RENEWAL at Brookhaven Hospital
Last week we learned why we need to pray. This week we will learn how to pray effectively to overcome emotional obstacles that can prevent us from receiving our emotional healing.
First you need to know that we are all human. I know it seems obvious, but this is something we seem to easily forget when we go through difficult times. We might have unrealistic expectations of ourselves that can make tough times even harder.
King David emphasized that we must encourage ourselves. Prayer allows us to do that as we pray to our heavenly Father for wisdom, revelation and insight in all things so that we can overcome difficult situations.
God’s word is true. God will never lie to you. This is why we take the Word and apply it to our emotions. God cares about our mind, will and emotions, but we must allow Him to help us. We can use a simple tool like prayer, which costs nothing–only your time and heart.
In some cases where abuse is a concern, we can get overwhelmed with our emotions and seem to be stuck. You want so desperately to get off of the emotional merry-go-round. There are all kinds of ways that we get stuck in our lives; stuck in a particular habit or way of thinking. You can use prayer to get off whatever your merry-go-round is.
Prayer takes consistency and determination. Prayer is now being incorporated in counseling sessions to not only support our emotional well-being but also to heal our spirit that has been bruised, damaged or even destroyed. God has equipped faith-based counselors to be able to counsel the whole person: mind, body and soul.
