RENEWAL Devotional: Part IV, Know how to use your Sword

Written by Rev. Lydia D’Ross, an ordained minister and the Renewal Program Outreach Chaplain for Brookhaven Hospital

For the last few weeks we have been talking about several parts of the Armour of God. We know that the helmet of salvation protects us from our own weaknesses and carelessness, we can confidently enter difficult situations knowing that we are going to be victorious with God’s help (Romans 8:14-17). We also talked about the Breast Plate of Righteousness. As I mentioned last week, before battle, a soldier would fasten the breastplate around his chest like a vest to protect his vital organs. If a soldier failed to wear his breastplate, an arrow could easily pierce his heart or lungs.  God truly wants your whole heart and nothing less.

This week, we will talk about the Sword of the Spirit. For believers, the Sword is the Word of God applied to our life situations. The Word of God brings us hope and when put it to use, the Word builds up our faith and gives us strength.

When the Sword is continually used, the person using the sword will become very sharp about the tactics of the enemy.  History tells us that the Romans used the sword to protect themselves from being attacked by their enemy.  Hebrews 4:12 tells us, that the “the word of God,” which is actually “sharper than any two-edged sword” requires daily practice.  Apostle Paul instructed Timothy, “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (II Timothy 2:15). In order to defeat the enemy, the Christian soldier must learn to use the sword of the Spirit with expertise.

Now that you have an understanding of how the Sword of the Spirit is used, try applying the Word daily by reading devotionals with your family. This is especially important during difficult times.  God loves you dearly and has given you these tools for you to apply to your life so you can live and enjoy His everlasting peace.
