RENEWAL Devotional: God is with us all the time
Written by: Rev. Lydia D’Ross, Renewal Program Outreach Chaplain, licensed and ordained minister
Sometimes we feel that God is not with us, especially when we feel trapped and hopeless. I love the book of Jonah as he prays to God during his time of distress. “In my distress, O Lord, I called to you, and you answered me.” (2v1) Jonah furthered prayed, “When I felt my life slipping away, then, O Lord, I prayed to you and… you heard me.” Jonah was in the depth of a whale when he prayed to God. This tells us that no matter how far you feel from God, there is not distance between you and Him. In Acts 10:34, Peter said, “….. God is no respecter of persons:” Peter was quite correct. God is not a respecter of person meaning that God does not show partiality or favoritism, and neither should we. We use our faith and know that when we pray to God in times of distress, He is there with us walking with us through our journey. Sometimes we feel so distressed about our situation that we can’t seem to get motivated to even get out of bed or to pray. This scripture from the book of Matthew brings comfort as it says “ Come to me , all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. (11:28) We do not have to take on our burdens alone, because God has provided a way to release you from your distress. We need to apply our faith and at times science to help us to alleviate the mental anguish that can cause additional stressors like physical illness. If you are feeling symptoms of depression such as sleep disturbance (too much or too little), poor appetite, lack of motivation to do your daily tasks, contact us at Brookhaven Hospital.
