‘Tis the Season for Overeating

With family stressors, emotions running high and tasty temptations around every corner, it seems that this is the season for overeating.  If you are a therapist working with clients or an individual who struggles with overeating, there are several tips for thriving during the holiday season of overindulgence.  Rhona Epstein, Psy. D., C.A.C., wrote in “Sweet Seduction: Counseling Strategies to Avoid Compulsive Overeating,” that she often tells her clients who have addictive behaviors of any type that “failing to plan is planning to fail.”    A big part of Epstein’s strategies for success during the holidays is creating an action plan for situations that we will likely encounter.  Epstein reminds us that the bottom line is there is no party, holiday or otherwise, that is worth losing our recovery over.  With prayer and planning, we can navigate the holiday season without slipping into old patterns of overeating.
