Binge Eating: Overweight Christians
Binge eating can be a real problem. Understanding what it is, how it affects your overall health and what God says about it is important. Being able to control your eating can be helpful in many areas of your life besides making sure you are a healthy person over all.
Binge eating is when we keep eating instead of stopping when we are full or when we know we have really eaten enough food. The problem Christians have is that we believe since we have “pitch-in’s” and various other meals at church, at various gatherings where we perceive that we have permission to overeat due to abundance of food and the high level of social involvement. But, we don’t and we still need to watch what we eat. We still have to be responsible when we are at the meals offered at church. There will be a variety of food, but that doesn’t mean we need to go crazy when we see it. But that also doesn’t mean you have to stay clear of the dessert table either – it is all about moderation.
Proverbs 30:21-22 say, “Under three things the earth trembles, under four it cannot bear up: 22- a servant who becomes king, a godless fool who gets plenty to eat.” When you have plenty to eat you tend to overeat and even eat when you aren’t thinking about it. Now watch the kind of food you are eating. This is also where the problem lies.
When you are too full you are unable to get the necessary rest you need because you are uncomfortable. Ecclesiastes 5:12 says, “The sleep of a laborer is sweet, whether they eat little or much, but as for the rich, their abundance permits them no sleep.” (NIV)
There are many ways to go about working with this problem. The first thing is to make sure you have a well balanced diet. But it is more than just eating healthy foods; it is about eating the right amounts of the right foods. You don’t need to completely ignore the sweets, but eat them in moderation and watch the time of day you eat them as well. Watch your caffeine intake as well. It is also a good idea to make sure you get exercise on a regular basis. Getting the right amount of rest is important in order to help your metabolism work right so you will burn the necessary calories. Not getting enough or too much sleep can affect you as well when it comes to your eating habits.
When you watch what you eat, how much of it you eat, include exercise along with making sure you get the right amount of rest, you will feel better about yourself and you will not want to binge eat, which will keep you from being an overweight Christian and help you to be able to be the person God wants you to be.
