How to Face Depression

Are you finding yourself sleeping when you should be going to work or church? Feeling like whatever you do nothing matters and that everyone looks down at you. Have you lost your happiness, nothing seems fun anymore.  Does it seem that God has turned his back on you?

Most Christian people experience depression at some point in their lives, it is the common problems, many people don’t realize. There is question from the bible which all of us have asked    “why art thou cast down o my soul? And why art thou disquieted within me? Psalm 43:5.

One reason we become “cast down and disquieted is because we get upset inside; there is a form of self-imposed isolation or mood swing that may be spiritually, emotionally or physically caused.

Even great men of God become depressed for significant period of time in their lives. Job, Moses, and Elijah at some point they wish to die. David becomes deeply depressed over his sins. Jeremiah grieved greatly for the sins of the people of Israel.     These Saints, whose lives are in the rest of God’s hands, experience the low tide in earthly life. Even Jesus in Matthew 27:46, He said “My God, My God why hast thou forsaken me?” And so in this life there is no exemption of this kind of feeling in distressed. A person may suffer more real pain depending on how the realization accepted by the individual concerned. Sometimes due to physical illness a person suffer depression because of the physical condition suffered by the chemical imbalance in the brain, menopausal change, hypoglycemia and other related sickness are some of side-effect that leads to depression.

On the other hand it is equally dangerous to minimize the symptoms because others were in denial stage pretending that nothing is bothering them. Depression will not just go right away until we accept it and made some solutions to ease the pain. Sometimes we struggle with self doubt, inferiority complex, and a shrinking shyness that makes us feel inadequate. Many people live with failure attitude toward life, and that attitude brings period of deep depression to us.

The period of up’s and down’s in life part of the natural rhythm of life. Just like the law of Tides is basic pattern of all life. The tide rise and fall, the tides go out and come back. We also as human nature are incline to bear the moments of our up’s and down’s in life. No human have moments of perfect stability in life, there are days we must face the different situations and seasons, and the normal fluctuations of our moods.

When our spirit are diving downward, it is easy to “black-out instead of being down fall, rise up and pull-out oneself on that mood, don’t let yourself surrender to your moods, stand-up and encourage yourself that you are a child of God, created in the image of God. When your soul is cast down, think that you are valuable and needed person. Face your hard situation with calmness and confidence knowing the God is on your side always ready to lift you up. Don’t let your inner-selves control your emotions, assert your authority and never give up. In Proverbs l6:32 …he that rule his spirit (is better) than he that takes’ a city.” When you feel discouraged put your hope in God, trust in Him alone and have peace in yourself, God is powerful and He is in control whatever situations we are facing, depend upon Him and He will strengthen us.

Do I have to handle depression alone?  No. It may seem that there is no one who understands what you are going through but there is. There are many people who want to help you today.
