2 smoking cessation drugs to carry warnings
A couple of popular stop-smoking drugs are now going to carry boxed warnings because of association with behavioral changes. The drugs varenicline and bupropion carry the risk of neuropsychiatric symptoms of depressed mood, hostility, agitation, and suicidal thoughts. Since the drugs began to be marketed, 98 varenicline users have committed suicide and another 188 have attempted to. Among bupropion users 14 have committed suicide and 17 have attempted suicide. The FDA is not going to remove the drugs from the market but strongly advises physicians to monitor the behavior of patients using the cessation drugs.
