Renewal Seminar Snapshots

"Pastoral burnout: Compassion fatigue and on the job stress"

Presenter: Lanny Endicott, D.Min, MSSW, LCSW, LMFT

Date: February 11th 2010

Synopsis:

Some Ministers may assume that extreme stress and fatigue are naturally a part of the role of serving in a community of faith; this, however, can lead to a dismissal of the harmful effects of stressors in ministry resulting in pastoral burnout. Available statistics reflect this reality; according to one study, 1,700 Pastors left the ministry each month in 2007, which is not surprising as 90% of Pastors reported working between 55 and 75 hours per week; it is of vital importance for Ministers to be aware of these realities. This workshop educated attendees on the effects of stress and compassion fatigue and focused heavily on self-care, offering a variety of practical steps and exercises to prevent pastoral burnout.
